In the southeastern city of Feni, Bangladesh, hundreds of people wade through chest-deep, muddy floodwaters, carrying their belongings above their heads to keep them dry as they attempt to reach safety.
Feni has become the epicenter of one of the worst floods in the country’s memory. Since Wednesday night, the flood has affected 11 districts, and large parts of the city, with a population of approximately 1.5 million, are now submerged.
Access to the flood zone is possible only by boat, as all main roads are closed to vehicles. Rescue efforts are hampered by power outages and communication breakdowns. The army and navy have been mobilized to coordinate relief operations, and volunteer efforts have increased nationwide. It is reported that around 5 million people are affected by the flood, with at least 42 confirmed dead, though the number is feared to rise.
